While this video is not very clear, you can still see and HEAR enough to know what is happening. Police killing people's pets in their own homes and yards is increasing and they are getting away with it! Most of them are unjustified murders! I've included links to several similar stories. These are what you NEVER see on the news, yet they're sure to show dogs who attack people. What about the innocent pets who are murdered by law enforcement every single day? What kind of justice do they get? What about the families...where is there justice? JUSTICE? I believe this is becoming as extinct as many animal species.

You see, because male chicks don't lay eggs—which means lost profits for the corporations—the industry doesn't consider them worth keeping alive.

China supplies more than half of the finished fur garments imported for sale in U.S.

When undercover investigators made their way onto Chinese fur farms, they found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them. When workers on these farms begin to cut the skin and fur from an animal's leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard to allow a clean cut.

When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals' heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them. Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly. Some of the animals' hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned. One investigator recorded a skinned raccoon dog on the heap of carcasses who had enough strength to lift his bloodied head and stare into the camera.

Before they are skinned alive, animals are pulled from their cages and thrown to the ground; workers bludgeon them with metal rods or slam them on hard surfaces, causing broken bones and convulsions but not always immediate death. Animals watch helplessly as workers make their way down the row.

In the wild, they prowl across hundreds of miles of jungle.

In contrast, these tigers share the wretched experience of battery hens.

Here in South-East China, hundreds of the endangered animals are cramped in tiny pens - and are slowly starved to death, say critics.

The reason, it is said, is that they are worth more dead than alive.

The Xiongsen Bear and Tiger Park is home to 1,400 tigers - more than live wild in India.

The trade in tiger-based medicines was banned in 1993 when China came under pressure from other nations concerned that the cats were being hunted to extinction.

However, the black market is profitable. A dead tiger can fetch up to £500,000.

Tiger bones are ground to a powder to improve strength. They are said to be worth £160,000 - more than ten times the price of the pelt.

Penises are sold as aphrodisiacs and whiskers are said to cure laziness.

The carcasses are also made into wine and brains mixed with oil to form an acne cure.

Penned in: Tigers are housed in rows of small cages at the park

Both the Save The Tiger Fund and the Wildlife Protection Society of India have accused the park of producing tiger bone wine.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species has called for it be closed.

In a cold store at the park lie the skins of hundreds of tigers.

They have been skinned and gutted, perhaps in readiness for the law to be repealed.

Mr Chau is alleged to have sold some, supposedly to raise money to feed his tigers.

Ticket sales do not cover his running costs, he says. But prosecution is not something he fears, as the government supports his venture.

There are thought to be 50 wild tigers left in China.

India has the greatest wild population, but it has halved in six years.

The second-largest slaughter of marine mammals in the world is just off the southern coast of Africa in Namibia.

During what's been described as "the cruelest seal 'hunt' on the planet," The Cape fur seals are rounded up on Namibian beaches and slaughtered over a period of 20 weeks, The pups are still nursing when they are clubbed or stabbed to death.

The annual commercial seal harvesting season in Namibia officially began on July 1 with a quota of 85 000 pups due to be clubbed to death and 6,000 bulls to be shot on the country's coast.

Cape Fur seals are killed mostly for their fur. Adult males are also killed for their penises, which are exported to Asia to be used as aphrodisiacs.

Ringling Brothers Circus- The Cruelest Show on Earth

Again, I'm showing another video about the treatment of circus elephants. You don't have to like PETA to realize this is inhumane. Hell...I don't care much for a lot of their tactics, by some of their radical members, but as a whole, they do a lot to expose animal cruelty and help to stop the exploitation. The feds have launched a probe of Ringling Bros. after undercover video showed trainers hitting circus elephants with whips and bull hooks.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday it will review footage to determine if "The Greatest Show on Earth" has violated the Animal Welfare Act.

"We take the protection of animals very seriously," said Dave Sacks, spokesman for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, an agency within the USDA.

"We will initiate a thorough investigation and provide the findings as soon as available."

The video was made by a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals activist who posed as a Ringling stagehand for six months this year.

It appears to show trainers leading the animals toward the stage while striking them repeatedly across the head, legs and body.

PETA - which has accused Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus of mistreating the elephants for years - has filed formal complaints with the USDA, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and agencies in seven states.

It also called for Madison Square Garden, which hosts the circus in New York, to cut all ties.

A Garden spokeswoman said executives will "discuss this kind of matter with [Ringling Bros.] directly and not through the media." At Ringling's summer circus in Coney Island, news of the video didn't worry ticket holders.

"They shouldn't be abusing the animals to give pleasure to children - but I saw the elephants. They looked calm," said Laurie Bisco, 55, of New Jersey.

Something to Think About Before You Take Your Dog to the Shelter

I'd like to thank them for their permission to copy the article here. This is truly an "IN YOUR FACE" and "HITS HOME" article I've read in a long time. I hope you'll take time to visit SAVING FURRY FRIENDS and their BLOG.

So just what did you think would happen to "Spot" if you dropped him off at the local shelter?

First let me start by saying this bulletin contains graphic images. The reason I chose to post these photos are multi-faceted. First I want to clear up any illusions that owners in southwest Va. have, that their precious dog “Spot” will surely find a home the reality is that Spot has less than a 10% chance of getting out of the shelter alive. Despite saving 204 dogs in 2008 our county shelter still had a 90% + euthanasia rate. To say say 20 dogs euthanized does not have the same effect as actually seeing it, being there. My only regret is that many of the folks I reach with this post already know what I am saying. I am preaching to the choir but for those that don't know, are not aware, here's your wake up call.

I chose today to post this after walking into a shelter to find one of the ACO’s in tears. In tears because two dogs that were just owner surrendered never even made it to the kennel area they were immediately taken to the euth room and euthanized as there literally was not a single solitary empty kennel to put them in. I post this for her, for all the people who say they couldn't do her job, for all the people who hate animal control this is a reminder that you are the reason they are needed. For those of you who say animals wouldn't die if it where not for animal control, I ask would it be better for them to die of starvation? be hit by a car only to languish in a ditch for days until death is a welcome relief? There is one person and ONE person only to blame and that is the OWNER.

I also post this for myself. For all the folks who think we try to raise funds too often, for all the folks that expect us to be cheerful as they surrender their pets, for all the folks who roll their eyes when us rescues give lectures on spay and neutering, on behavioral modification to correct behaviors that drove the owner to bring the animal to the shelter in the first place. For my extended family and friends who don't understand why we are constantly stressed but also driven.

I post this for every owner that gets a dog without ever having researched the breed. They have no idea as to the dogs size, energy level or grooming needs. A little research and you would have known that a border collie would not be a good fit in your one bedroom apartment.

I post this for every rescue out there begging for help that falls, many times, on deaf ears.

Many, if not most times, they are the only thing standing between the animals and death.

Most of the time when a plea is sent out about an animal in need many folks are generous with their funds, time and home a great number are saved but a great number are also lost and that is a side many don't see. More than anything this post is for them, in memory of them.

If you use household products and toiletries, as most of us do, then you need to know how these products are tested! And we aren't just talking about mice here!

Do you smoke? Do you take medications? Do you use cosmetics? Are you aware that ALL of these tests performed on animals are insignificant to humans, therefore completely unnecessary. There ARE alternative methods for testing products that DO NOT use animals and it’s been proven to be a more accurate method of testing! Let’s put an end to this animal holocaust!

A WORD OF WARNING! Your own pet could end up in one of these testing labs if it ever ends up in a shelter, given away for free, or stolen. Not all dogs stolen are sold for dog fighting "bait"! Testing Labs will pay for dogs...no questions asked, and there are people who know this and WILL steal dogs from yards just for the money!

There are people who watch for ads (especially on Craigslist) listing FREE or cheap dogs and appear to be the "perfect loving family" for your pet. They are very convincing and good at what they do! Always do a home check and ask a LOT of questions to be sure you have found a good home. Get a Vet reference if they claim they just lost their beloved pet. Be vigilant and be aware! If something doesn't "feel" right, don't sell to that person! Go with your gut instincts. Don't put yourself in an "urgent need" situation to get rid of your pet. If you must...There are rescue groups as an alternative.

Most often, if you ask for any amount over $100 (within reason), people who really want your pet as a family member won't object. People who will re-sell your pet to labs don't want to pay that much because they can't make a profit.

People who buy dogs for "bait" MAY pay as much as $300 because they know they'll make that money back if they know they have a winning fighter.

Many shelters sell animals to labs just like this one, but they'll never tell you that!

Chained To You - Dedicated to Shepp

A memorial song for Shepp, a sweet German Shepherd starved to death on the end of a chain which was tightly embedded into the poor dog's neck.

Shepp was rescued by animal protection services in Corpus Christi, USA, September 2008. Sadly Shepp lost his fight for life soon after he was rescued.

JUSTICE for SHEPP

Shepp was a dog that was left for well over a month, to die with no food or water and chained to the extent that his collar was embedded in his skin. No one cared. The neighbors saw him suffering, yet nobody did anything until it was too late. Someone had placed food by him, but by then he was too weak to even get up. Someone contacted (KZTV) a news station that stands up for people and animals alike.

Shepp was taken to animal control were he was cared for by the vets and staff there, I know for a fact, for I was able to see him from behind the glass on Friday afternoon. The tech, vets and staff that were there with him, treating him with such compassion and care. Shepp passed away later that afternoon, which was devastating to the vets and staff.

His will to live was there, he wagged his tail and even tried to lift his head. However his body couldn't take it, due to the extreme neglect he endured for a month. He left this life. (KZTV Action 10 News) has set up a site for Shepp, they will remain attentive to this story.

What is needed is signatures on a petition started out for justice.

In these cases of cruelty it is often difficult to catch and charge those responsible. For one month. Shepp had no food, little or no water. There are many that are in dire need of help and it is appalling how long this went on.

Our VOICE can make all the difference ..

Please take a moment, as hard as it is, please, view the video. It tears me apart, but to bear witness, we shall speak out for those that cannot.

Thank you my dear friends. And please REPOST Shepp's story far and wide. That justice may prevail and to those who stood by and did nothing you must be held accountable as well. For the guilt lies heavy upon you.

A death squad pursues a terrified dog.

Please help stop the slaughter.

A massive cull in the Chinese city of Hanzhong has claimed the lives of more than 30,000 dogs - and now we need your help to make sure that it never happens again.

The local government ordered the mass slaughter of all dogs as the result of a few cases of rabies deaths. Dog killing squads are stalking the streets, mercilessly beating dogs to death with sticks and rocks.

Friendly dogs - even healthy family pets - are being slaughtered right in front of their owners. Can you even begin to imagine how you'd feel if that happened to your dog?

IFAW has pleaded with government officials to stop the killing - and now we turn to you.

Please help us stop these cruel and massive slaughters once and for all.

Horrifying scenes of cruelty

Some of the pictures from culls like these are so horrifying that I can't even show them to you. And I hate having to describe this, but I think you need to know the truth about what's happening.

In one series of pictures, several small and fluffy white dogs - you can just tell they're used to snuggling on the laps of their loving owners - are trapped in a makeshift cage. One by one, the dogs are pulled out with a pair of long metal tongs, and brutally beaten with a stick. And then - even though it appears that some of the dogs may still be alive - they're tossed into a pit to be burned.

I can't even imagine the pain and terror these poor dogs endure when the fire is set.

So many dogs will suffer slow and painful deaths...we must stop this cruelty now!

What we're doing and how you can help

We have received so many messages in the past few days from animal lovers like you inside and outside China - pleading with us to step in and stop the slaughters like the one in Hanzhong City.

I assure you, IFAW is working to end these culls:

We've already contacted local authorities in Hanzhong City to urge them to end the slaughter. Now you can help by contacting the Chinese Ambassador in your country.
IFAW is creating an emergency rabies vaccination fund so that we can offer rural communities in China an alternative to mass slaughters like the one in Hanzhong. Please give generously to our emergency rabies vaccination fund.
We're working with the central government to pass animal welfare legislation in China that will ensure the humane treatment of all animals. IFAW has already helped major cities like Beijing establish dog regulations that mandate humane vaccination and population control.

We CAN stop culls like this

We recently joined with concerned animal lovers in China to stop a similar mass slaughter in the city of Heihe by pointing out that the killing of dogs that have rightful owners is a violation of the basic rights of a citizen - owned dogs and cats are considered the "personal property" of Chinese citizens, and should be protected under China's Constitution.

Plus, it has been proven that rabies can be effectively controlled by a well-managed vaccination program. In fact, a humane vaccination and neuter program in Chennai, India, has dramatically reduced rabies cases there by over 95%.

So we must act now to stop the killing! Please click here to contact the Chinese Ambassador in your country to call for an end to mass slaughters like this and to encourage China to pass legislation that protects all animals, including companion animals.

And then please donate what you can today to help us set up an emergency vaccination fund to help cities in China establish rabies prevention programs, help eliminate these mass dog culls once and for all, and to continue our mission to protect animals around the world from cruelty.

The slaughtered dogs of Hanzhong City deserved a better fate. Please help us ensure that dogs in other communities in China are protected from similar mass killings.

99% of People Do Not Know These Facts!

2,000,000 cats and dogs are sadistically skinned alive every year in China for their fur and left to die slowly in shock and excruciating pain.

The animals are caged in cramped conditions, often fed on starvation rations or on the skinned carcasses of other cats and dogs.

Prior to skinning, they are dragged from their cages. The skinners hit them with a heavy metal rod or wooden club to break their necks or backs leaving them incapacitated and unable to defend themselves. Smaller animals are sometimes picked up by a hind leg and swung against the cage or the ground to achieve the same result. In most cases the animals are alive and conscious during the whole skinning process, squealing and yelping in agony in full view of the other terrified animals waiting in their cages for their turn.

In some cases the dogs may be led to a place of execution, where they are chained together or in a row. Each dog watches the horror metered out to the others, listening to their agonised squeals and frantically struggling to get away. When finally a man or woman walks towards it, rod or club in hand, the struggling terrified animal leaves no doubt that it knows exactly what is about to happen.

When incapacitated, the animal is usually strung up by a back leg or held down by a skinner wearing heavy boots for protection, standing or kneeling on its neck, to stop it from wriggling away. After incisions are made in the fur with a knife, the skinner forces his or her fingers under the fur and taking care to ensure that the whole pelt comes away in one piece, rips the pelt from its writhing agonised body. A bullet or lethal injection is too expensive and the skinners say it’s easier to rip an intact fur from a live warm body rather than one that is dead and inert. The ghastly task is completed when the helpless animal is entirely stripped of its fur – even the fur from its head is torn away.

The skinned animal is then cast aside to die in shock and excruciating agony.

This is probably the worst case of mass cruelty inflicted on helpless animals in the history of our so called “civilised” world. 2,000,000 cats and dogs skinned alive every year translates to 5,479 per day or 228 helpless animals suffering this unimaginable horror every hour of every day of every year – year after year.

The callous indifference shown by the Chinese government towards the suffering of the animals is inconceivable and completely unacceptable..

Cats and dogs have no animal rights in China and they never will unless we – the people who care – fight for those rights on their behalf.

If we don’t, the alternative is too horrible to contemplate.

WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW .....

There is an air of celebration in the village as the baby elephant, unable to move in any direction, awaits her fate. Young and old come to watch and participate in the spectacle before them.

One by one, additional ropes and steel cables are wrapped around her belly, legs, and feet—even her tail is bound. She desperately tries to thwart off her tormentors to no avail, using her trunk to push the ropes away and to defend herself from their painful blows. But there is no mercy. Her trunk and the sensitive skin between her toenails are hit with clubs and punctured with nail-studded sticks, and nails are inserted into her ear canals.

Bound and exhausted, she can no longer stand. Her legs give out, forcing her to hang by the ropes choking her neck or wrapped around her belly or to collapse against the sides of the cage. A jab to the ribs sends her momentarily upright again.

A village elder climbs on top of her and straddles her neck. He holds a stick attached to a long, curved, and pointed blade. Speaking in Thai, he delivers a message to the baby elephant, “Remember, if you don’t go against us, we won’t hurt you.” He raises the blade, spits on it, and sinks it into her head, directly between her ears. Each time he drives the blade into her head, he strains to work it back out of her tortured and bloodied flesh. Later, it is discovered that she has lost her ability to hear, most likely the result of this elder’s sadistic lesson.

The elder dismounts and two young men take his place. They casually sit atop her back, one smoking a cigarette. His cigarette break over, the man fervently works the pointed end of a stick into the wound in her head, placed there by the village elder. She roars in inescapable agony, lifting her head in a futile attempt to shake off this instrument of pain.

Dusk has fallen upon the village, and through the smoke of a campfire burning beside her cage, her sorrowful eyes reveal the fear and confusion of a baby elephant whose world has been turned upside down. Her mother is gone and she has been bound, beaten, and abused by those she trusted. However, her ordeal is far from over. For the next several days, she is denied food, water, and sleep. Taking shifts, the villagers beat her day and night, ensuring that her subjugation is absolute and complete.

A week later, witnesses to the beatings discover her tied to a tree outside the village. Her eyes are swollen shut, blood and pus run down her large, torn ears, and her body is covered with raw wounds. Footage of other caged baby elephants with diarrhea coating the backs of their legs is graphic evidence of the pure terror that they endure. Beatings will be used regularly for the rest of their lives to remind them “who’s boss.” Some will eventually snap from the strain of relentless abuse, attacking and killing mahouts and tourists.

Circuses would not be so fun if torture of animals was seen!

Why are the people who abuse animals looked upon with disgust, but when the circus comes to town, it's called "the greatest show on Earth?"

I think it's due to the fact that most people don't realize how cruel and torturous the circus is to the animals. Take elephants: a Peace Corps volunteer witnessed just how sensitive elephants are. He wrote: "(The baby elephant) would try to stand but would fall back on his side with a heart-wrenching scream. The mother would follow with a louder, seemingly more painful scream. She tried everything to help — she would drop to her knees and lift the baby with her trunk — each time he fell back — the baby would scream, the mother would scream. I saw the elephants stroke the mother's back reassuringly with their trunks.

I ran across this blog from Of Selfishness & Arrogance, that was posted in July of 2005 and was so touched by it, that I had to feature it here. I tried to contact H.J.S., the author and Blogger, but there has been no response. I'm certain the author would be pleased to see how his essay touched me so much...and hopefully, it will touch you too.

I do not know how a society that likes to think of itself as evolved, enlightened, humane and civilized can tolerate any level of animal abuse. What is it in the brain of certain human beings that would allow him or her to not only torture, maim or otherwise abuse and/or deliberately injure another living creature (one that feels pain, anguish and fear)… but to enjoy such activity and derive pleasure directly from those acts of depravity… feeding off the fear and pain of that animal? I have seen the pleading look of tormented eyes… begging for help, crying out for some relief… “please help me… or at least end my suffering… please!” I have watched a dog belly-crawl across the floor in a desperate agonizing attempt to avoid being deliberately hurt again… and again… and yet again! Just wishing… “please don’t kick me again. Please!” I have witnessed the aftermath of months of being tied to a tree, with only occasional food and water. (And yet, in spite of such dispicable treatment, the tail wags each and every time - rare though it be - that a “person”(?) is sighted!) We have failed and we will all be judged. Every single one of us. For not caring. For not trying. For not protecting and guarding. DUTIES TO WHICH WE HAVE BEEN PRE-ORDAINED. It is our responsibility as rulers of this earth. IT IS OUR SOLE OBLIGATION.

Starvation, suffering, anguish, fear, pain, slow agonizing death, constant torment… these are unimaginable conditions to most people. But there are countless and untold thousands of dogs whose lives will never offer anything but those conditions! These are intelligent animals who feel love, sorrow, pain, fear, happiness… the only thing they are incapable of feeling - or understanding - is hate. But I guess they have us for that. Can you even comprehend what it must be like to live - exist(?) - like that? Will you even allow yourself to attempt a level of empathy so you can picture inside your evolved, enlightened, humane and civilized mind what that is like?

Centuries ago we took dogs as domesticated friends and companions. We promised to take care of them. They did not ask to be domesticated. They would have been perfectly happy to continue living their lives in the wild as nature had intended. But we took them. Promised them a better existence for being our guardians, protectors, workers, companions and friends. That is the hardest of all to swallow. That we deliberately did this to them. And give nothing in return. Nothing of our promises. We just take and take and take. When will we give? When will we honor our promise? Our duty? Our responsibility as a race of evolved, enlightened, humane and civilized people?

Has it not always been the mark of a good ruler, that he/she protected - truly protected - and cared for ALL his/her subjects? We have climbed to the top of the food chain. Does that alone give us the right to do whatever we may please to any other creature, supposedly beneath us, just because we can? Great power brings great responsibility. Are we destined to be judged as an unworthy species? Incapable - or unwilling - to accept the responsibilities that come with the power we have achieved?
What has become of our Compassion, Kindness, Humility, Gratitude, Patience?

Compassion for all God’s creatures, for hasn’t He entrusted their care and well-being to us?

Kindness to every living animal, for they are entitled to such simply by their existence.

Humility to remember that we are not “better” or “more important” than other animals, just different.

Gratitude for all that we have, for all that this world offers… for being the rulers, rather than the ruled.

Patience with all living creatures whose only crime is that they may be different from ourselves.

Dogs are very wonderful animals, indeed! To understand and open one’s self to the love of a dog, is to truly know “unconditional love”! They know no other way to love. They give of themselves in spite of receiving nothing in return. They will remain loyal and protective, though they may receive no thanks or gratitude in return. They know no other way to love. Dogs ask only for the most basic and simplest of things… food, water, shelter, kindness, a gentle word occasionally and a warm hand to pet them. For no more than that, they will lay down their life for you. Willingly, eagerly. They know no other way to love. If you abuse them, they will forgive you. If you are unkind, they will turn another cheek. If you hurt them, they will accept it. If you ignore them, they will remain silent at your side. If you turn them out, you need only beckon and they will return gladly. They know no other way to love. Once you understand this, truly understand what it means… once you have allowed this to sink into your consciousness and let yourself grasp the true and loving nature of this animal, you will eventually realize what an abominable affront to God himself our tolerance of animal abuse has become!

A dog is a social animal. Left on their own, they live in packs. In the wild, all dogs are pack animals. They have a very rigid and structured social order within their pack. They are den-dwelling, socially oriented, pack animals. They are NOT loners! In a domesticated environment, dogs want, need and actively seek out the comfort of being with their people. A dog views his “family” of people as his pack. The pack is necessary for his very survival. Belonging to the pack is paramount for his existence. Interaction is required for his emotional stability and overall wellbeing. That understood… how could anyone possibly be the least bit surprised or confused at the distrustful, anti-social, unfriendly, nasty and uncertain behavior of a dog which is left completely alone and tied up in the backyard? IT IS BASIC CAUSE AND EFFECT. Do you know why solitary confinement is used as a method to “break” the spirit of a human being? BECAUSE IT WORKS!

I cannot change the world. I cannot save every animal. I cannot save every dog. I cannot rescue every senior canine that has been turned out because of old age or special needs. But…

So that is how it must begin. One at a time. Not everyone can make a difference in the world. But anyone can make a difference for one dog. Think about that. If you think one person can’t change anything… if you believe that one person can’t make a difference… try changing your focus from “the world” to “a dog”! You will find that you can change everything… you will make a difference… a life will be affected by your actions… your love and caring will not go unrewarded!

I can’t help but question how we got to this point. Are we so involved in our own separate worlds… have we become so thoroughly selfish… that we no longer even care? Somehow, I still believe that there are people out there who cry for the suffering animals. Though I wonder, are we so few that we are drowned out by the sheer abundance of the abusers and those who really don’t care at all? Perhaps. And perhaps my problem is always setting my sights too high… like changing the world instead of saving one dog. If I can focus my energy and emotions on the reality of helping one animal, can I perhaps convince one other person to do the same. And could that person save only one animal and then also convince only one other person to do likewise? WOULD THAT NOT EVENTUALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD? THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD…?

There are those who would contend that it is naive to believe in such fantasy…

I am going to try to prove them wrong.

AP Exclusive: Video shows workers abusing pigs

WASHINGTON (AP) — An undercover video shot at an Iowa pig farm shows workers hitting sows with metal rods, slamming piglets on a concrete floor and bragging about jamming rods up into sows' hindquarters.

On the video, obtained by The Associated Press, a supervisor tells an undercover investigator for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that when he gets angry or a sow won't move, "I grab one of these rods and jam it in her (anus)."

The farm, located outside of Bayard, Iowa, about 60 miles west of Des Moines, is a supplier to Hormel Foods of Austin, Minn. PETA wants to use the results of the investigation to pressure Hormel, the maker of Spam and other food products, to demand that its suppliers ensure humane treatment of pigs.

Hormel spokeswoman Julie Henderson Craven on Tuesday called the abuses "completely unacceptable."

The animal rights group also planned to send the video to the sheriff in Greene County, Iowa, seeking prosecution of 18 people on animal cruelty violations. According to PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich, the video shows eight people directly abusing animals.

"Abuse on factory farms is the absolute norm, not the exception, and anyone eating factory-farmed meat is paying to support it," Friedrich said.

After getting a whistleblower complaint from someone inside the farm, PETA sent two undercover investigators to get hired at the farm and document its practices — one from June 10 to Sept. 8, and the other from July 23 to Sept. 11.

At one point on the video, an employee shouts to an investigator, "Hurt 'em! There's nobody works for PETA out here. You know who PETA is?"

The undercover PETA investigator replies that he's heard of the group.

"I hate them. These (expletives) deserve to be hurt. Hurt, I say!," the employee yells as he hits a sow with a metal rod. "Hurt! Hurt! Hurt! Hurt! ... Take out your frustrations on 'em." He encourages the investigator to pretend that one of the pigs scared off a voluptuous and willing 17- or 18-year-old girl, and then beat the pig for it.

Records at the Greene County Assessor's Office show the property was owned by Natural Pork Production II LLP of Iowa until Aug. 18, and then was transferred to MowMar LLP of Fairmont, Minn.

Lynn Becker, an owner of MowMar, called the abuses on the video "completely intolerable, reprehensible. We condemn these types of acts. If any animals were abused in the brief time we've owned the farm, if we still employ these people, any attempt will made to investigate and initiate corrective action immediately."

Becker said his company provided animal welfare training to the staff when it took over the farm.

Natural Pork Production II referred questions to AMVC Management Services, which managed the farm under its ownership. Mark Jones, AMVC's network manager, said the video showed "unacceptable practices" and that his company is working with the new ownership to investigate.

Craven, the Hormel spokeswoman, said the farm became a Hormel supplier only after the change in ownership, and that MowMar "shares our commitment to animal welfare and humane handling."

Craven said it was her understanding that the abuses took place before the change in ownership. But PETA's Friedrich said the abuses continued, and that the new manager abused animals by shocking and kicking pigs.

Dr. Jennifer Greiner, a veterinarian and director of science and technology at the National Pork Producers Council, said the industry condemns "willful abuse" of pigs and that the video depicts acts that are not acceptable.

"Our industry is committed to handling pigs humanely," she said. "My industry is full of good people."

At one point in the video, workers are shown slamming piglets on the ground, a practice designed to instantly kill those baby pigs that aren't healthy enough. But on the video, the piglets are not killed instantly, and in a bloodied pile, some piglets can be seen wiggling vainly. The video also shows piglets being castrated, and having their tails cut off, without anesthesia.

Temple Grandin, a leading animal welfare expert who serves as a consultant to the livestock industry, said that while those are standard industry practices, the treatment of the sows on the video was far from it.

"This is atrocious animal abuse," Grandin said after PETA sent her the video. But she disagreed with PETA's contention that it was widespread in the industry.

"I've been on many good farms, and the pigs are handled gently," she said. "This was blatant, deliberate animal cruelty. These people are sick. They need to be prosecuted. There are certain people that enjoy hurting animals and they should not be working with them — period."

One of the PETA investigators, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect his ability to do further undercover operations, said there was a culture of violence on the farm, and working there was an emotionally and physically exhausting experience that typically involved working 12-hour shifts and walking 15 miles a day.

"So many times, it took all of my willpower not to step up and do something," he said, adding that he also saw the supervisor shove a cane into a sow's vagina. "I was just shocked. What do you say to that?"

The newest controversy over exports from China has caused nightmares for researchers documenting the abuse inflicted on animals bred and raised in tiny cages and then skinned alive for their fur.

WND has reported multiple times on problems with exports from China, with poison found in pajamas, consumers warned against using ginger, an alert about the dangers from China's pickled vegetables and even the dangers from honey and fireworks.

Now comes word from an extended investigation into the fur trade that China is estimated to produce approximately 85 percent of the world's fur products – and it has virtually no regulations or rules for the treatment of the animals.

According to Mark Rissi, a spokesman for Swiss Animal Protection, which has documented abuse of animals raised for their fur as early as 1983, the China project has been going on for several years.

The organization's report has been made available online, with dramatic images and descriptions that researchers found more than disturbing.

"As animals are considered objects in China, there is little or no awareness for the suffering of these sentient beings," Rissi told WND from his European base of operations via e-mail. "The cruelty found was beyond our expectations, and it was hard to document without interfering. It caused nightmares to the team, especially in the editing room, because the scenes had to be replayed and replayed to be edited from six hours down to 20 minutes."

Rissi said the actual onsite investigation was done by his organization's staff members as well as trusted Asian animal protection supporters, but as fur production was not a controversial subject, "people willingly showed their farms to the team."

He said he's glad other organizations, such as the U.S.-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, have joined in his group's campaign.

Once pulled out from its cage, the raccoon dog curls up into a ball in mid-air. … One woman in a headscarf is first to grab hold of the raccoon dog's tail and the others drift away peevishly. The woman in the headscarf swings the animal upwards. It forms an arc in the air and is then slammed heavily to the ground, throwing up a cloud of dust. The raccoon dog tries to stand up, its paws scrabbling in the grit. The wooden club in the woman's hand swings down onto its forehead. The woman picks up the animal and walks toward the other side of the road, throwing it onto a pile of other raccoon dogs. A stream of blood trickles from its muzzle, but its eyes are open and it continues to repeatedly blink, move its paws, raise its head and collapse to the ground. Beside it lies another raccoon dog. Its four limbs have been hacked off but still it continues to yelp.

The report then graphically describes how the dogs are skinned, sometimes while they are living.

Rissi noted that the Humane Society of the United States also has worked on the investigation, citing well-known U.S. companies, including J.C. Penney, Burlington Coat Factory, Bloomingdale's, Sak's Fifth Avenue and Macy's, for selling Chinese-produced fur products, sometimes labeling them as "faux fur" or raccoon when the actual product is from a raccoon dog.

The Swiss Animal Protection report said slaughter methods range from beatings with a metal or wooden stick or swinging the animal until it slams to the ground.

Then they are skinned.

"They struggle and try to fight back to the very end. Even after their skin has been stripped off breathing, heart beat, directional body and eyelid movements were evident for five to 10 minutes," the report said.

The process is repeated millions of times, as China processes up to 100,000 pelts in a day at times.

Bear Baiting- Not Your Average Game of "Cat & Mouse"

This is a sad and shocking video produced by WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) exposing the disgusting, savage, and very cruel practice of bear baiting.

Bear baiting involves pitting an innocent bear (which has cruelly had it's teeth and claws removed) tying it to a post and pitting it against a frenzied onslaught by two dogs (pit bull terriers) where the innocent and helpless bear has to try and fend them off and fight for its survival.

Bears in this savage blood sport suffer horrible abuse, such as ripped noses, mouths and permanent scarring; after the event is finished, both the bear and the dogs are spared as they are too valuable and will be used for future illegal bear baiting events.

Bear baiting occurs in Pakistan and is illegal in that country, but it still goes in remote regions and awareness of it must continue, so if people see illegal bear baiting events they can report them to the authorities and prevent and stop them from going ahead and happening.

As you can see from this video, it's absolutely disgusting and unforgivable and such savage and horrible animal cruelty can't be justified out of tradition culture or entertainment.

WSPA prevented and shout down over 50 illegal bear baiting events in 2005 / 2006 and with the commitment of the Pakistani government will hopefully and likely shut down many more.

A picture is worth a thousand words
The graphic picture shows the grim reality of pet over population.

The caption reads: Two days' worth of euthanized animals sit in barrels in cold storage at the Kern County Animal Shelter on Mount Vernon Avenue. The animal shelter euthanizes about 25,000 animals every year.

This is two days worth of dead animals from a small shelter in California. TWO DAYS!

Every single one of those animals came from somewhere... a puppy mill, a back yard breeder, someone who 'just wanted one litter' from their dog. When you choose to create life, you are responsible for that life. Those animals didn't ask to be born, and they sure didn't ask to die in fear in the hands of a shelter employee. Shelters have NO CHOICE but to euthanize these animals, more and more come in every day. There are far more animals than there are homes.

The ONLY way to stop this wholesale slaughter of healthy, happy pets is to STOP PRODUCING THEM. 99% of pet owners have no 'need' for a 'pure bred' dog. They don't intend to show the dog or compete in breed specific performance trials. Getting an 'AKC' dog from the local paper is no guarantee of health or temperament or quality. In fact, you have a BETTER chance of getting that 'perfect' dog from a reputable rescue where the dogs are evaluated before you adopt them.

If only this could be put on shirts for us to wear!! Then maybe people would get the hint!! Breeding all cats and dogs cause this problem, don't think purebreds never have this problem, cause rescuers have seen all types and many of them are from breeders that sold babies that never get spayed or neutered then those people let their pets have babies and they sell them, and the cycle never stops. If you are breeding then you are contributing to the problem, your kittens and puppies are not exempt from this cycle, even if you think they are going to good homes!

A four-month investigation launched by SAFE has revealed that beagles and other companion animals are destined for a new wave of New Zealand animal research carried out on behalf of international organisations.

Current affairs programme 60 Minutes interviewed the man at the centre of SAFE's campaign, Alan Goldenthal, who made a convincing attempt to justify the use of animals for research. SAFE felt the 60 Minutes programme was disappointing journalism. It was a weak, passive and largely unbalanced look at animal research in New Zealand. The reporter made factually incorrect statements and let the researcher go unchallenged. Watch 60 Minutes.

A total of 318,489 living animals were used for animal research (vivisection) in New Zealand last year. The most recent national figures available reveal 757 cats and 682 dogs were used in 2006. The use of cats and dogs for research in New Zealand has doubled since 2001. Most laboratory animals will suffer. Many will die. None will be loved. If they are lucky, their death will be quick and painless, but most won't be so lucky. Help SAFE to ban cruel animal experiments now.

These video clips show hunters in a canned hunt situation. The lioness has been lured into a fenced paddock, by holding her cubs on one side of the fence. As she frantically tries to get to them in clip one, the hunters guide is trying to coax her away from the fence so that the hunters will have the feeling that they shot her in the wild. The second clip is very graphic and disturbing. The hunters shoot her to death, right in front of her crying cubs and then all gather around the dying lioness, with milk dripping from her teats, to have the pictures made. These take a while to load, but the animals need you to be patient and to see what is happening to them all across America. In many cases they are shot in transport cages and don't even have this much of a chance.

If you don't know what a canned hunt is, you're not alone. The folks who run these operations don't want people like you to see them -- ever. That's because the operators of canned hunts charge trophy hunters a fee to shoot captive, exotic animals at close range. Many of these so-called hunters have little experience with a rifle. The animal suffering can be extreme.

More than 1,000 commercial canned hunting operate across the country, which allow trophy hunters to kill exotic animals such as African lions, giraffes and blackbuck antelope who never even have a chance to escape. There is neither sportsmanship here nor ethics, only a desire to make money off the killing of captive animals.

The Horror of a "Canned" Lion Hunt

It seems unfathomable to those of us who love these magnificent animals but trophy hunting is currently a very serious threat to the African lion. Trophy hunting not only depletes the population of the African lion, but threatens its gene pool as well. Killing the dominant male of a pride (normally the target of a trophy hunt) sets off a chain of instinctive behavior in which the subsequent dominant male kills all the young of the previous dominant male (6-8 estimated deaths result from each male shot).
A hole in the reproductive cycle, a dwindling population, and a diminishment of the reproductive gene pool replace the natural process. Despite this fact, approximately 1,500 lions are killed every year in Southern Africa alone. Given the urgent need for revenue among African locals, and a willingness to pay handsomely for such trophies among Asians, Europeans and Westerner's, predators are increasingly hunted for sport, even as they disappear.

Over the past few years, we have been shocked and outraged by what we have seen and heard with regard to the "canned" hunting industry, an industry in which lions in captive conditions are bred for the hunter's gun. Witnesses have described scenarios of lions being taken to hunting farms and then shot in small confined areas by high-paying foreigners.

The smiling children giggled as they patted the young goat on its head and tickled it behind the ears.

Children feed goats before the 'show' starts. One that has been 'bought' by a visitor is carried off

Some of the more boisterous ones tried to clamber onto the animal's back but were soon shaken off with a quick wiggle of its bottom.

It could have been a happy scene from a family zoo anywhere in the world but for what happened next.

A man hoisted up the goat and nonchalantly threw it over a wall into a pit full of hungry lions. The poor goat tried to run for its life, but it didn't stand a chance. The lions quickly surrounded it and started tearing at its flesh.

The ravenous big cats quickly attack the goat and start to tear it limb from limb, all in the name of 'entertainment' for the Badaling zoo visitors

"Oohs" and "aahs" filled the air as the children watched the goat being ripped limb from limb. Some started to clap silently with a look of wonder in their eyes.

The lions tear the goat to pieces within seconds of landing in the enclosure

The scenes witnessed at Badaltearing Safari Park in China are rapidly becoming a normal day out for many Chinese families.

Baying crowds now gather in zoos across the country to watch animals being torn to pieces by lions and tigers.

Just an hour's drive from the main Olympic attractions in Beijing, Badaling is in many ways a typical Chinese zoo.

Next to the main slaughter arena is a restaurant where families can dine on braised dog while watching cows and goats being disembowelled by lions.

The zoo also encourages visitors to "fish" for lions using live chickens as bait. For just £2, giggling visitors tie terrified chickens onto bamboo rods and dangle them in front of the lions, just as a cat owner might tease their pet with a toy.

During one visit, a woman managed to taunt the big cats with a petrified chicken for five minutes before a lion managed to grab the bird in its jaws.

The crowd then applauded as the bird flapped its wings pathetically in a futile bid to escape. The lion eventually grew bored and crushed the terrified creature to death.

The tourists were then herded onto buses and driven through the lions' compound to watch an equally cruel spectacle. The buses have specially designed chutes down which you can push live chickens and watch as they are torn to shreds.

Once again, children are encouraged to take part in the slaughter.

"It's almost a form of child abuse," says Carol McKenna of the OneVoice animal welfare group. "The cruelty of Chinese zoos is disgusting, but think of the impact on the children watching it. What kind of future is there for China if its children think this kind of cruelty is normal?

"In China, if you love animals you want to kill yourself every day out of despair."

But the cruelty of Badaling doesn't stop with animals apart. For those who can still stomach it, the zoo has numerous traumatised animals to gawp at.

A pair of endangered moon bears with rusting steel nose rings are chained up in cages so small that they cannot even turn around.

One has clearly gone mad and spends most of its time shaking its head and bashing into the walls of its prison.

There are numerous other creatures, including tigers, which also appear to have been driven insane by captivity. Predictably, they are kept in cramped, filthy conditions.

!Zoos like this make me want to boycott everything Chinese," says Emma Milne, star of the BBC's Vets In Practice.

"I'd like to rip out everything in my house that's made in China. I have big problems with their culture.

"If you enjoy watching an animal die then that's a sad and disgusting reflection on you.

"Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised by their behaviour towards animals, as the value of human life is so low in China."

East of Badaling lies the equally horrific Qingdao zoo. Here, visitors can take part in China's latest craze — tortoise baiting.

Simply put, Chinese families now gather in zoos to hurl coins at tortoises.

Legend has it that if you hit a tortoise on the head with a coin and make a wish, then your heart's desire will come true. It's the Chinese equivalent of a village wishing well.

To feed this craze, tortoises are kept in barbaric conditions inside small bare rooms.

When giggling tourists begin hurling coins at them, they desperately try to protect themselves by withdrawing into their shells.

But Chinese zoo keepers have discovered a way round this: they wrap elastic bands around the animals' necks to stop them retracting their heads.

"Tortoises aren't exactly fleet of foot and can't run away," says Carol McKenna.

"It's monstrous that people hurl coins at the tortoises, but strapping their heads down with elastic bands so they can't hide is even more disgusting.

"Because tortoises can't scream, people assume they don't suffer. But they do. I can't bear to think what it must be like to live in a tiny cell and have people hurl coins at you all day long."

Even worse is in store for the animals of Xiongsen Bear and Tiger Mountain Village near Guilin in south-east China.

Here, live cows are fed to tigers to amuse cheering crowds. During a recent visit, I watched in horror as a young cow was stalked and caught. Its screams and cries filled the air as it struggled to escape.

A wild tiger would dispatch its prey within moments, but these beasts' natural killing skills have been blunted by years of living in tiny cages.

The tiger tried to kill — tearing and biting at the cow's body in a pathetic looking frenzy — but it simply didn't know how.

Eventually, the keepers broke up the contest and slaughtered the cow themselves, much to the disappointment of the crowd.

Although the live killing exhibition was undoubtedly depressing, an equally disturbing sight lay around the corner: the "animal parade".

Judging by the rest of the operation, the unseen training methods are unlikely to be humane, but what visitors view is bad enough.

Tigers, bears and monkeys perform in a degrading "entertainment". Bears wear dresses, balance on balls and not only ride bicycles but mount horses too.

The showpiece is a bear riding a bike on a high wire above a parade of tigers, monkeys and trumpet-playing bears.

Astonishingly, the zoo also sells tiger meat and wine produced from big cats kept in battery-style cages.

Tiger meat is eaten widely in China and the wine, made from the crushed bones of the animals, is a popular drink.

Although it is illegal, the zoo is quite open about its activities. In fact, it boasts of having 140 dead tigers in freezers ready for the plate.

In the restaurant, visitors can dine on strips of stir-fried tiger with ginger and Chinese vegetables. Also on the menu are tiger soup and a spicy red curry made with tenderised strips of big cat.

And if all that isn't enough, you can dine on lion steaks, bear's paw, crocodile and several different species of snake.

"Discerning" visitors can wash it all down with a glass or two of vintage wine made from the bones of Siberian tigers.

The wine is made from the 1,300 or so tigers reared on the premises. The restaurant is a favourite with Chinese Communist Party officials who often pop down from Beijing for the weekend.

China's zoos claim to be centres for education and conservation. Without them, they say, many species would become extinct.

This is clearly a fig leaf and some would call it a simple lie. Many are no better than "freak shows" from the middle ages and some are no different to the bloody tournaments of ancient Rome.

"It's farcical to claim that these zoos are educational," says Emma Milne.

"How can you learn anything about wild animals by watching them pace up and down inside a cage? You could learn far more from a David Attenborough documentary."

However pitiful the conditions might be in China's zoos, there are a few glimmers of hope.

It is now becoming fashionable to own pets in China. The hope is that a love for pets will translate into a desire to help animals in general. This does appear to be happening, albeit slowly.

One recent MORI opinion poll discovered that 90 per cent of Chinese people thought they had "a moral duty to minimise animal suffering". Around 75 per cent felt that the law should be changed to minimise animal suffering as much as possible.

In 2004, Beijing proposed animal welfare legislation which stipulated that "no one should harass, mistreat or hurt animals". It would also have banned animal fights and live feeding shows.

The laws would have been a huge step forward. But the proposals were scrapped following stiff opposition from vested interests and those who felt China had more pressing concerns.

And this is the central problem for animal welfare in China: its ruling elite is brutally repressive and cares little for animals.

Centuries of rule by tyrannical emperors and bloody dictators have all but eradicated the Buddhist and Confucian respect for life and nature.

As a result, welfare groups are urging people not to go to Chinese zoos if they should visit the Olympics, as virtually every single one inflicts terrible suffering on its animals

"They should tell the Chinese Embassy why they are refusing to visit these zoos,' says Carol McKenna of OneVoice.

"If a nation is great enough to host the Olympic Games then it is great enough to be able to protect its animals."

They Slaughter Horses, Don't They?

auction in New Holland, Pennsylvania.

The thoroughbred Soccoro Sky, has the blood of champions running through her veins. Her grandfather was Seattle Slew, the 1977 Triple Crown winner, one of the greatest racehorses of all time. The five year old Soccoro Sky has even been a winner, herself. But you won't believe where INSIDE EDITION found her.

Just five days after a dismal seventh place finish, she was sent to a horse auction in New Holland, Pennsylvania where horse rescue groups say she was to be sold for slaughter.

At dozens of auctions around the country, many horses are sold to dealers known as kill buyers for just a few hundred dollars. Their final destination is a dinner plate overseas.

Hundreds of horses of all kinds are sold at New Holland every week. As many as 15% are shipped out of the country and slaughtered for human consumption. For many thoroughbreds, the end starts as soon as they finish in the back of the pack at the tracks.

Actor Paul Sorvino, who appeared in hit films like Goodfellas, and his daughter Amanda are on a crusade to expose what he says is a cruel and inhumane process.

"If a horse can't run fast enough on the track, he goes to slaughter. So he is literally running for his life," Sorvino tells INSIDE EDITION.

A video clip provided to INSIDE EDITION by the Sorvinos, shows a dealer taking a thoroughbred right from the racetrack to a Pennsylvania auction to be sold for slaughter.

In the U.S. there are currently no horse slaughter plants in operation. But they do exist in Canada and Mexico, so horses are often crowded onto trucks for a long journey across the border. According to Sorvino, the trip is long and arduous. "They're not fed. They're not watered. They're not taken care of."

In videotape from the Humane Society of the United States, a horse is shown being prodded by a rifle before being killed by a shot in the head at a plant in Canada.

The Humane Society says conditions can be even crueler in Mexico. At one plant, a frightened horse is shoved into a small pen before being repeatedly stabbed in the neck. Callous workers can be heard cheering when the horse finally goes down.

"They're just dying in this barbaric, despicable and unconscionable way," says Sorvino's daughter, Amanda.

Ultimately, the meat is shipped overseas to butcher shops, many that even specialize in horse meat, and restaurants that have horse dishes on their menus.

While slaughter seems brutal, Jim Holt, the veterinarian at the New Holland horse auction, says if the horses weren't killed for food, thousands would simply be abandoned, and left to die a slow painful death. He tells INSIDE EDITION, "We feel that it's, at this point, a necessary evil."

Soccoro Sky was ultimately saved by an animal rescue group. Sadly though most unwanted horses aren't as lucky. Sorvino says it's up to owners of the horses, especially in the racing industry, to take responsibility for their animals.

"Think about that horse winning with the roses around his neck, and then one year later he's hanging from one leg in a slaughter house," Paul Sorvino says. "Think about that and then say we've got to do something."

There are bills now pending before both the House and Senate that would permanently ban the export and slaughter of American horses for human consumption.

The Suffering in China's Zoos

On 8 August 2008 the XXIX Summer Olympics opens in Beijing, China with a glittering threeandahalf hour ceremony. The Chinese authorities aim to dazzle the billions watching on TV with “a splendid party”, featuring photos of 10,000 children’s smiles taken around the world to mark the Games’ theme of “One World, One Dream.” With Steven Spielberg and French multimedia show designer Yves Pepin as consultants, the ceremony promises to be the most spectacular yet.

But while the world savours the flags, fireworks and colourful choreography at Beijing’s National Stadium, captive wild animals across China will be silently suffering as they suffer day in, day out, in some of the most horrific zoos on earth.

One Voice sent a team of specialist investigators to eight zoos. What they saw and filmed there reduced these experienced professionals to tears.

China’s zoos are relics from a longdead era of grotesque menageries, places where wild animals are humiliated, abused and cruelly treated for public pleasure. These often old and decaying places are animal prisons in which the pitiful inmates behave psychotically because of their barren incarceration. Alarmingly they are places where visiting families callously mock and taunt the already traumatised animals. In some, the bloodlust of the Roman amphitheatre is perpetuated : live farm animals are thrown to the big cats to be torn apart for visitor entertainment.

In China, zoo or any other captive or companion animals have no protection whatsoever in law, yet this is the country determined to use its Olympic Games to show it is the forward thinking, economic powerhouse of the 21st Century. It is a nation whose zoos are still in the Dark Ages, as this report graphically shows.

Animal prison

The conditions most animals endure at these zoos are disturbing. The norm is a bare concrete floored cell or cage scattered with faeces and food remnants. Some of these had no freely available drinking water when we visited. Most alarming of all is the inadequate size of these animal prisons.

Big cats in cells five paces wide ; a twometre hippo in a bleak enclosure just twice its length ; a leopard cub in a bedsized cell ; a monkey chained by its neck in a wheeled cage just two metres by one, shrinking from the blazing sun in a vain attempt to find shade… Around each corner lies a new heartbreak. Worse, many animals are housed singly, denied even the comfort of their own kind to mitigate the privations of their existence.

Beijing Zoo, a place filled with inadequate housing, typifies the lack of thought in providing conditions that meet animals’ needs. Here, Asiatic and moon bears were living in a desolate bear pit, enduring continual noise from construction work on an overland metro railway : astonishingly, it passes directly over their compound.

Pacing out the endless days : Like many big cats in Chinese zoos, this lion at Beijing Zoo resorts to stereotyped pacing to try to dull the monotony of existence in a tiny, barren tiny enclosure.

Captive animals that are inadequately housed or lack stimulation can sometimes resort to repetitive, apparently pointless behaviour in an attempt to numb themselves to their predicament. This“stereotyped behaviour” is a key indicator of poor welfare : China’s zoos are a virtual text book for it.

An alarming proportion of animals at the zoos we visited were displaying stereotyped behaviour, often to an extreme degree. Animals from big cats to monkeys and bears paced relentlessly, some repeatedly licking the walls, others swinging their heads dementedly side to side. We saw animal after animal busily going nowhere in this psychotic fashion.

At Zibo Zoo we saw 20 squirrelsjumping over each other in an endless, stylised frenzy : their cage measured just two metres by one. Nearby in the worst big cat conditions we found at any zoo panthers, leopards andjaguars continually paced out their wretched days in cellsjust three by four metres. It wasn’t just lack of space that tormented them : a noisy children’s playground was nearby, generating an endless cacophany of synthesised music and explosions.

Mocked and humiliated

The behaviour of large numbers of zoo visitors towards these pitiful animals is arguably the single most disturbing feature of China’s menageries. Many, including families with children, treat the animals simply as objects of derision. Apparently oblivious to the creatures’ misery they shout, growl and whistle at them, they rattle and kick the bars to provoke reactions, they laugh and jeer.

At Zibo Zoo, our team was sickened to see visitors spitting at wolves that were incarcerated in tiny cells without even water to drink. They also saw a laughing family provoking two neurotic Pekinese dogs to bite their shoes by kicking the bars of their bleak enclosure.

Worse followed at Bedaling Safari Park. As well as feeding live chickens to the big cats, visiting families can also buy them to tie to bamboo poles by the feet and dangle over a pitstyle lion enclosure. Our investigators watched visitors tease the big cats with the terrified birds until these were caught and eaten alive watched all the while by crowds of cooing and laughing adults and children.

A diagnostic kit to crack down on illegal trade in bile extracted from live bears is being used by Australian and Canadian customs officers, an animal welfare group says.

Bear bile is a common ingredient in traditional medicines throughout East and Southeast Asia, says the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).

The test kit uses antibodies to detect a signature bear protein and was demonstrated this week at a meeting in The Hague of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which involves 171 nations.

"Interest from wildlife trade enforcement officials has been very strong," says Professor Kate Sanders, an evolutionary biologist who adapted a technique used to identify species in venomous snakebites to develop the kit.

The kits are slated to go on the market at the end of the year and will cost no more than US$40 (A$47), says Sanders, from Australia 's University of Adelaide.

The active compound in bear bile is ursodeoxcholic acid (UDCA) and is thought to be effective for ailments ranging from liver disorders to hemorrhoids to hepatitis.

The compound has been available in a synthetic form for years, say animal rights groups calling for an end to bear farming.

Yet the use of bear bile is still widespread, a WSPA survey released this week shows.

More than half of 130 traditional Asian medicine shops in eight countries investigated illegally-sold products containing bear bile, the survey shows.

The WSPA says most originated from China, where the fluid is drawn off using one of several painful methods from more than 7000 animals held in box-like cages on dozens of farms. The procedure is not illegal in China, but CITES bans all cross-border commerce in bear parts.

The survey of Asian medicine shops in North America and the Asia Pacific region uncovered dozens of illegal bear bile products.

About 15% of the stores investigated in the US and Canada sold the contraband, with the percentage increasing to 22% in Singapore, 33% in Korea, 42% in Taiwan and 75% in Japan.

Cruel methods

The methods used to extract the bile from farmed animals varies from one country to the next, but all are condemned by animal welfare groups as cruel.

"In Vietnam, farmers typically immobilise the bears with a paralysing drug, often ketamine," known to recreational drug users as 'special K', says Dave Eastham, head of wildlife for WSPA.

"They use ultrasound to locate the bile and then insert a long hypodermic needle to draw off 100 to 150 millilitres of bile," he says, repeating the process once a month. The bears are conscious throughout the process.

"We have tapes showing the bears screaming with apprehension just before the procedure begins," he says.

In China, a more primitive technique has been outlawed but Eastham says it "is still very common".

The bile drips from a tube - surgically inserted through the bear's abdomen- equipped with a tap that can be turned on and off. Extractions are daily, sometimes twice a day.

It is like bleeding sap from a maple tree, "only more painful", he says.

More than half of bears farmed for bile in China do not survive for very long after extraction begins, but those that do can live for up to 10years.

Growing demand for gall bladders, paws and even hearts is feeding the lucrative illegal market

Gordon Hitchcock and his fellow officers in British Columbia are struggling to solve a triple slaying that points to a massive underground organ smuggling trade spurred by demand in Asia.

The bodies of the victims - all three of them black bears - were found dumped last month at remote roadsides near the town of Nanaimo on the southeastern coast of Vancouver Island.

Their mutilated carcasses were discovered within days of one another, with their paws hacked off and their gall bladders and hearts removed.

"That one puzzled us a bit," said Mr Hitchcock, operations manager of the provincial Conservation Officer Service. "We don't normally see hearts removed."

But otherwise, the case is remarkably similar to the numerous other black bear killings that Mr Hitchcock has encountered during his 17 years with the environmental conservation office.

Bear paws and gall bladders are highly prized in the international trade of animal parts as they are believed to possess healing properties in traditional Chinese medicine.

Over the years, the lucrative underground trade has encouraged poachers to kill an untold number of wild Canadian black bears, each weighing 90kg to 200kg, for a few grams of their valued parts.

Gall bladders, which are used to treat a variety of illnesses from fevers to ulcers, are particularly sought after. These sell for thousands of US dollars each on the black market in Asia, where they can be worth more than their weight in gold.

During the 1990s, bear paw soup, considered a delicacy in many areas of Asia, was reported to cost as much as US$1,000 a bowl.

Concerned that the province's wild bears were threatened by poaching, the government of British Columbia imposed a ban in 1993 that targeted the commercial trade and possession of bear gall bladders, gall bladder derivatives - or bile products - and bear paws separate from the carcass.
(The distinction that parts be separate from the carcass is critical as bear hunting is legal in the province, provided it is done during the designated hunting season and with a valid permit.)

Those violating the ban face up to C$100,000 (HK$739,000) in fines and up to one year in prison.

For a while, the illegal killings seemed to level off, but Mr Hitchcock said the poaching in British Columbia appeared to be on the rise again.

Several recent convictions, including a couple in Vancouver who were fined C$6,000 last September for possessing a bear gall bladder, have done little to deter the trade. And the authorities have no suspects in the latest slaughter.

Although Mr Hitchcock was not able to immediately provide the number of cases now under investigation, he noted the caseload was at a high.

"We have noticed a spike in increased unlawful activity in the past two to three years," he said.

He said he could not speculate on what was fuelling the surge, but wildlife activists believed growing demand and increased wealth in Asia were to blame.

Since the 1980s, demand in Asia has been so great that suppliers in China, South Korea and Vietnam have set up bear farms, where they keep the animals in small cages and use tubes or syringes to extract bile from their gall bladders daily, according to an international charity group, World Society for the Protection of Animals.

Such farms were legal in China, and the bile products they generated could be sold legally within the country, the society said in a March report.

Yet paradoxically, instead of quelling demand for wild bear parts from
Canada, bear farming has contributed to the problem, said Michelle Cliffe of the society's Canadian branch.

"What's happening is the bear farming industry is creating a demand for bear bile products," Ms Cliffe said, noting that suppliers marketed their products aggressively to the public.

Not only is the general demand rising, many consumers believe wild bear parts are more potent and, thus, more valuable than bile from farmed bears, she said.

The society's investigators were told regularly by traders that wild gall
bladder products would cost much more than farmed bile, the report stated.

In a survey last year, the society found that bear products were traded
illegally throughout the globe, including in the US, Canada, Japan,
Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan, contrary to domestic laws and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

Canadian black bears are not endangered, but many other species whose parts are traded are, such as the Asiatic black bear and Malaysian sun bear.

Products from these bears, found in Asian herbal medicine shops, ranged from whole gall bladders to bile crystals, pills, ointments and liquids, the survey said.

While an average bear gall bladder cost US$235 in Canada, the same product was sold at as much as US$3,486 in South Korea.

In Japan, the average price of bear bile was US$48 per gram - more than twice the market price of gold.

To crack down on the sale of bear products in Canada, the society has developed test kits, which are being tried out in the field by federal wildlife investigators to detect bear protein quickly in various products.

"Until now, [federal officials] haven't had any ability to find out without
sending it to a lab," Ms Cliffe said.

She said the Canadian authorities expected to conclude their six-month trial of the test kits in November.

Meanwhile, some practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine are doing their best to stem the demand.

Dr Pan Xiaochuan, principal of the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Victoria, British Columbia, said his students were taught to use synthetic bear bile, made from chemicals or alternatives such as cow bile.

Traditionally, he said, the bear gall bladder and bear bile were used to
treat ailments associated with the eastern concept of "heat".

Fevers, ulcers and even acne are all categorised as heat-related disorders, which can be remedied with ursodeoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in bear gall bladder and bile.

Dr Pan said he had never used real bear products, even when he practised medicine for 20 years in China.

Authentic bear parts were far from necessary, he said, and even synthetic bile products, which cost as little as 50 Canadian cents for a small vial, were rarely prescribed.

"We have so many other herbs that have the same function," he said. "So it's not necessary to use them."

Starved to Death Dog Becomes Art?! SICKENING!

An "artist" from Costa Rica, named Guillermo Habacuc Vargas, put a starved dog as a work of art, the poor dog dead there, he did not want anyone give him food or water. This monster asked some children to chase the dog and he paid them for their dirty work to give him the dog.

He tied the dog, according to furious animal lovers, in a corner of the salon where it died after a day. Habacuc’s exhibition included a legend spelled out in dog food reading “You are what you read,” photos and an incense burner that burned an ounce of marijauna and 175 “rock’ of crack cocaine. In the background, according to reports, the Sandista national anthem played backwards.

In that event, (in which the dog died) he was chosen to represent his country in the "Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008", the petition site is to sign to boycott him , so he won't can participate in the event:

Macaque monkeys,(like Felix), are intelligent, good natured and inquisitive animals. In the wild they have strong family bonds and display many "human" characteristics...as can be seen in these videos below:

That these intelligent and social animals to be taken from the wild to be treated in such terrible ways is utterly incomprehensible!

Macaque monkeys are often used by vivisectors because of their size and good nature. Despite the fact that they provide unreliable results, there is a global industry involved in the trapping and shipping of macaques monkeys for the "research" industry.

However, it's only after they've been snatched from their natural habitat, caged and shipped half-way around the world that their nightmare really begins. They are subjected to years of painful and invasive "tests" which cause them to live a life of fear and agony before finally being killed when their useful "life" is over...and all for unreliable experiments which only ever hinder proper research into human illnesses!!!

Whilst scientists such as Tipu Aziz would have us believe that primate experiments are essential for medical research...this is a blatant lie! Primate experiments have been shown time and again to be provide inaccurate results and have often been harmful to human health:

* Macaques are immune to the Hepatitus B virus, which is fatal to humans.

* Flosint, an arthritis medication, was tested on monkeys that tolerated the medication well, but it killed humans.

* PCP (angel dust), sedates chimpanzees but causes humans experiences including paranoia.

* Amrinone, a medication used for heart failure, was tested on numerous nonhuman primates and released without trepidation. Humans haemorrhaged, as the drug caused failure in their blood cells responsible for clotting, in 20% of patients taking the medication on a long-term basis.

* Nitrobenzene is toxic to humans but not monkeys.

* Isoproterenol killed people, but it was found to be impossible to reproduce the effects in monkeys.

* Carbenoxalone caused people to retain water to the point of heart failure - some died. This was impossible to reproduce in monkeys.

* Actinomycin-D, the first of the chemotherapy drugs, kills monkeys. None of the main human carcinogens affects monkeys.

* Drugs known to cause birth defects were tested on pregnant monkeys. Seventy percent of the drugs were safe in the monkey tests!

It's too late for Felix, but it's still our obligation to prevent more macaque monkeys being exported to laboratories to suffer his fate, or worse! If the supply of animals is restricted it's amazing how scientists find humane ways of testing, so stop the supply and stop the cruelty...it really is that simple!!!

The government of Mauritius is permitting the Biosphere Trading Company to trap 1,200 wild macaque monkeys and ship them to US laboratories, the license also allows Biosphere to breed and ship another 1,500 of the animals to the US every year thereafter. There is also evidence that the same Biosphere Trading Company are exporting primates to Europe and the UK.

The monkeys are frequently injured during the trapping process, they endure grueling journeys in the holds of Air Mauritius and Air France planes bound for Paris and Frankfurt. From there they are often brought by road and ferry to Dover for onward delivery to UK research centres, (such as HLS).

Mauritius' main income is from tourism, (they even have the cheek to promote "Eco Tourism"), and the income they will receive from becoming involved in this vile trade is comparatively small. Therefore if Mauritius realise that their loss from tourism is much greater than any gain from exporting macaque monkeys to a life of unimaginable horrors then they will clean up their act.

In memory of Felix and all the other macaques who've suffer equally appalling fates in laboratories around the world, send your disapproval directly to the Mauritian tourist board and let them know that you won't holiday there whilst they allow the trapping of wild primates to send to laboratories, or the breeding of those animals for the same purpose!

China - the up and coming economic power of the world - do not support them, please please buy products manufactured in your own country - domestic products. Do not buy Chinese Products.

Why?

See for yourself the cruelty they inflict on animals on a daily basis, deliberately drawing out pain and torture to increase the "flavour" of the meat.

China do not have any laws in place to protect animals in any shape or form - animals are nothing more than food - hells bells they eat their pets for heavens sakes!

Select your dog, skin it while it is alive or semi concious, then take a blow torch and burn the outside with it to seal the meat.

When that is done start chopping it up ready for the pot or for sell off in bits

Nothing goes to waste - the fur from the dog, cat, rabbit racoon goes into the fur trade and ends up as a trim on a hood of a jacket that winds up in your local shops. Hell even hair bands dyed different colours like blue are cat fur!

This array of food includes what looks a skinned rabbit or cat. Now cats die terribly too, they get put alive and fully concious into a pot of boiling water and get boiled while alive - to loosen the fur, the alive part is the torture part to increase flavour. The Chinese include lizards, snakes, scorpions, bugs, beetles anything that moves - gets eaten alive or dead depending on what ridiculous notion takes them. These notions usually come down to improving their pathetic manhoods!

Cat selection is done with a pole with wire on the end, the noose is put around the neck and the cat dragged out kicking and crying.

The animals can spend hours or days lying jam packed in tiny cages on top of one another without food or water, watching other cats and dogs being tortured and killed in front of them - the smell of fear, pain and death constantly in their nostrils.

Rabbit below - skinned alive, it still holds its head up and waits for death - a pot of boiling water as if skinning alive was not enough!

Raccoon below - skinned alive - it lies there raises its head, still blinking, it turns around looks at its body (as if to say omg what happened to me, where is my fur!) then drops its head down in shock and continues to breathe for a further 10 or so minutes before finally god takes its soul and sets it free from pain.

The tiger below - sits chained on a very short chain - unable to move all day, so that tourists can pose next to it for a photo. the tiger has had three of its most important teeth removed, (the teeth it uses for tearing meat) why? So that should he bite a tourist the damage will not be too severe!

Below - Stunned Pigs trussed to a motor cycle going to the market where they will be burned with a blow torch to remove the bits of hair off their bodies - whilst still alive! Why? It increases the flavour of the meat you know! If you must know...by the time they reach the "shop" the stun that has kept them quiet for the bike ride has worn off and they are revived at the shop.

Below - Chickens still alive tied to a motorcycle - how many? Sheesh you guess! these terrified chicken piled on one another go to the market to be hung by a wire placed around their feet, and plucking begins - then the throat is slit and the animal chopped up.

Do I really have to go on? Please join the boycott of goods made in China. hit China where it hurts in the financial pocket. Lets make the Chinese government sit up and take notice that their "customers" object to their treatment of animals. Force them to make changes, sign the petition please.

Taiwan's insanely cruel contest

Help WSPA end cruel contest in Taiwan

Every year in Taiwan hundreds of pigs are force-fed to increase their weight to grotesque proportions and then sacrificed for a festival known as the "Pigs of God" contest. For up to two years pigs are confined and force-fed, sometimes using sand or heavy metals to add as much weight as possible.

Unable to move or stand, the pigs can reach four times their normal weight, and the heaviest wins. The animals are killed in front of a crowd by having their throats cut while fully conscious.

Under Taiwan's existing animal protection laws, the force-feeding and inhumane and public killing of animals are illegal. But the government has been unwilling to intervene for fear of a backlash from religious groups that claim the contest is part of their tradition, even though the contest dates back only 30 years.

You can help end this cruelty

WSPA has partnered with our member society, the Environment and Animal Protection Society of Taiwan (EAST), to abolish the force-feeding and inhumane killing of pigs for the Pigs of God contest. We are jointly promoting an animal-friendly alternative contest where real animals are replaced by pigs made out of flowers or other materials.

A Pigs of God website has been developed to promote an on-line petition and the sending of letters of protest to the Taiwanese government. You can help by visiting the site to add your name to the thousands of others who want to see an end to this cruel spectacle. China's dogs & cats are boiled, stabbed, drowned, bludgeoned, strangled, poisoned, hanged, and electrocuted...experiencing unbearable pain as their legs are routinely broken while trussed up and hung in local markets, or skinned alive and cast off like garbage, for the despicable fur trade.
Dogs [both owned and stray] are relentlessly hunted down by 'police authorized' roving mobs and savagely beaten to death by the hundreds of thousands, in the name of 'rabies' control.
Bears, suffer a lifetime of excruciating pain as they are surgically mutilated and milked each day for their gall bile. Their paws taken as delicacies for the Chinese restaurant trade or ground into powdered 'medicines'. The use of bear parts supplying the traditional Chinese medicine trade and exotic meat market is the major reason why bear species are declining around the world. Endangered species of bears are fast becoming extinct.
Rhino, both Black & White, are butchered for their horns and are now highly endangered.
Over 70-100 million sharks PER YEAR are 'finned' and their carcasses dumped into the sea, to accommodate Chinese' growing taste for shark fin soup.
TONS of elephant tusks are carved into ivory trinkets--their feet hacked off for stools and coffee table legs.
Animals are used as 'dried' ingredients in traditional Chinese medicines and killed in the billions--tiger parts, crocodile bile, deer musk, sea horses, lizards, sea cucumbers, powdered antlers, dog penis, pangolin (scaly anteaters), only to name a few on a seemingly unending list. ALL are considered no more than 'products' to be abused and murdered in the most monstrous ways possible, even if it means permanently wiping many of these species from the face of the planet in order to fulfill often frivolous, antiquated and selfish needs.
China's role in the single, largest mass butchery of marine mammals on Earth, the annual Canadian seal slaughter, [which has taken over 1.25 million innocent lives in the last 3 years, alone], happens in part, so that dried seal penises can be turned into aphrodisiacs to "theoretically" increase the libidos of elderly men engaging in sex with Asian girls as young as 7 years old.
Live domestic pets, as well as cows and chickens, are fed to lions and tigers for the "entertainment" of visitors at Chinese zoos. Zoo officials encourage guests to buy domestic animals on the premises, and feed them to the carnivores through special vending flaps fitted onto tourist buses...allowing individuals to throw chickens and other FULLY CONSCIOUS animals to the waiting predators.

CHINA'S GROWING WEALTH MEANS AN EVER-EXPANDING COLLECTION OF EXOTIC WILDLIFE ON THE MENU!

A Chinese chef describes how to cook pangolin [endangered scaly anteater] :

"We keep them alive in cages until the customer makes an order. Then we hammer them unconscious, cut their throats and drain the blood. It is a slow death. We then boil them to remove the scales...cut the meat into small pieces and use it to make braised meat and soup. Usually the customers take the blood home with them afterwards."

Live monkey brains are considered a delicacy:

A "gourmet" can buy monkeys in the marketplace and send them to inns for cooking. The cooks first stuff the monkeys into tiny cages and force them to drink rice wine until they're intoxicated. They are then pulled from the cage and bound by their limbs (preventing movement.) Their skulls are hacked open with a sharp knife to reveal easily visible, pulsing blood vessels.The white brains are then scooped out and served as soon as possible; eaten when still warm with seasonings. Monkey brains become pungent if they are not fresh...if the skull was opened too long ago. Thus it is best to open the skull and eat at once, while brain cells are LIVING and blood vessels throbbing.

It is not unusual in many areas of China, to see live deer in pens or crocodiles in tanks at restaurants. Buying and eating rare animals is a common way of SHOWING OFF. In southern China, rare meat is known as ye wei (wild taste), and people believe eating exotic animals can endow them with bravery, long life or sexual prowess. The Cantonese brag that they will eat ANYTHING that moves!

China's insatiable frenzy for non-human body parts is expanding, consuming, and decimating everything in its wake. This ancient society of 1.3 billion people, many of whom appear to have no compassionate connection toward sentient beings, whatsoever, MUST BE STOPPED!

WITHHOLDING $$$ IS THE SINGLE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY **YOU** CAN FORCE POSITIVE SOCIAL CHANGE!

Individuals engaged in animal abuse will NOT be immediately swayed by moral pressure, or legislation.

Swift, significant change can ONLY come through economic losses to those who victimize!

Isn't it true that the animals wouldn't exist if we didn't raise them for slaughter?

There are two ways to interpret this question. First, the questioner may be referring to "the animals" as a species, in which case the argument might be more accurately phrased as follows:

"The ecological niche of cows is to be farmed; they get continued survival in this niche in return for our using them."

Second, the questioner may be referring to "the animals" as individuals, in which case the phrasing might be:

"The individual cows that we raise to eat would not have had a life had we not done so."

We deal first with the species interpretation and then with the individuals interpretation. The questioner's argument applies presumably to all species of animals; to make things more concrete, we will take cows as an example in the following text. It is incorrect to assert that cows could continue to exist only if we farm them for human consumption. First, today in many parts of India and elsewhere, humans and cows are engaged in a reciprocal and reverential relationship. It is only in recent human history that this relationship has been corrupted into the one-sided exploitation that we see today. There IS a niche for cows between slaughter/consumption and extinction. Second, several organizations have programs for saving animals from extinction. There is no reason to suppose that cows would not qualify. The species argument is also flawed because, in fact, our intensive farming of cattle results in habitat destruction and the loss of other species. For example, clearing of rain forests for pasture has led to the extinction of countless species. Cattle farming is destroying habitats on six continents. Why is the questioner so concerned about the cow species while being unconcerned about these other species? Could it have anything to do with the fact that he wants to continue to eat the cows?

Finally, a strong case can be made against the species argument from ethical theory. Arguments similar to the questioner's could be developed that would ask us to accept practices that are universally condemned. For example, consider a society that breeds a special race of humans for use as slaves. They argue that the race would not exist if they did not breed them for use as slaves. Does the reader accept this justification? Now we move on to the individuals interpretation of the question. One attempt to refute the argument is to answer as follows:

"It is better not to be born than to be born into a life of misery and early death."

To many, this is sufficient. However, one could argue that the fact that the life is miserable before death is not necessary. Suppose that the cows are treated well before being killed painlessly and eaten. Is it not true that the individual cows would not have enjoyed their short life had we not raised them for consumption? (the cattles that are treated "well" and killed "painlessly" may be 5%)

How then are we to proceed? The key is that the AR movement asserts that humans and nonhumans have a right to not be killed by humans. The ethical problem can be seen clearly by applying the argument to humans. Consider the case of a couple that gives birth to an infant and eats it at the age of nine months, just when their next infant is born. A 9-month old baby has no more rational knowledge of its situation or future plans than does a cow, so there is no reason to distinguish the two cases. Yet, certainly, we would condemn the couple. We condemn them because the infant is an individual to whom we confer the right not to be killed. Why is this right not accorded to the cow? I think the answer is that the questioner wants to eat it. 86% -- Percentage of people in 332 dog fighting and animal cruelty cases in Chicago from 2001-2004 with previous criminal arrests; most were members of street gangs.

U.S. Dog-Fighting Rings Steal Pets for "Bait" - They also look for listings in newspapers and on the internet for "free to good hone" ads. DON"T BE FOOLED by them! Just NEVER, EVER,list an animal for "free".
Always put a price, no matter if you are giving the animal away. This will deter "bait" dog lookers.

Animal-welfare groups and law-enforcement officers say pets throughout the country are frequently nabbed for "bait"—animals used to test another dog's fighting instinct. The "bait" is mauled or killed in the process.

Dogfighting's violent nature and appeal to gamblers have made the blood sport a brutal, yet popular pastime since its introduction to America in the early 1800s. But although the practice has since gone underground, the underlying theme hasn't wavered—dogfighting remains a malicious exploitation of animals.

The blood sport continues to menace communities despite the fact that it's illegal in all 50 states, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. While 48 states have made dogfighting a felony crime, most states impose only misdemeanor-level penalties for attending dogfights, which does little to discourage animal fighters or encourage law enforcement to pursue cases.

Why Should You Care?

Dog fighting has become a serious issue within our community. Why should you know how to recognize and report suspected dog fighting activities? Because dog fighting is a felony and is linked to many other illegal and criminal activities. Law enforcement and animal welfare investigators report:

* dog fighters are often involved in illegal gambling, the sale and possession of drugs, as well as illegal weapons.

* dog fighters and spectators have a history of violent and criminal behavior toward people.

* dog fighting is another entertainment activity for gangs.

* dogs trained for fighting have been known to viciously attack innocent people for no apparent reason.

* it is not uncommon for dog fighters or spectators to involve their children in dog fighting.

Research shows young children who view this type of violence have a greater acceptance of aggressive attitudes and behavior. These children are taught to believe that it's okay to inflict the cruelties they observe and that dog fighting is an acceptable practice.

Too often, animal rights advocates (ARAs) are challenged with the hysterical hypothetical of the "burning house dilemma." It runs something like this: If you were caught in a burning house, were running out the door to save your life, and only had time enough to save a dog in one room and a human being in another, which would you choose? ...

Clearly, to answer the burning house question at all, we have to break it down in order to specify concretely and in various situations: Just who is the dog and who is the human between whom we have to choose? The burning house question cannot be answered in the abstract; one's answer to it will–or at least should–vary according to the specific being occupying the abstract placeholders of "dog" and "human being." I say should vary, knowing that the speciesist will, no matter what, favor the human over the dog.

Five YOUNG Boys Set a Dog On Fire

The boys are ages 9-14.!! Parents need to take responsibility for the actions of their children. The first responsibility, is to teach their kids to RESPECT life, not viciously destroy it.
No one has to love animals, but at least respect their right to live. What these kids goes beyond hatred...something they must have learned from the elders in the family . A child just doesn't decide to do something like without some kind of physchological influence from the adults in their lives.
Children who do this sort of thing at these ages, are surely looking at life behind bars as adults.

Five Boys Accused Of Setting Dog On Fire

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Five Nashville boys, accused of setting a dog on fire, appeared in court Thursday.

On Tuesday, four of the boys were booked into the juvenile detention center. The youngest boy was sent home, but all appeared in court Thursday.

A juvenile court judge Thursday placed three of the boys under house arrest; one boy was kept in detention and the fifth boy was sent to the custody of the Tennessee Department of Children's Services.

The incident happened Sunday near an abandoned house. The boys are ages 9-14.

Metro Animal Control Officer Lina Hernandez said that witnessed reporting seeing the animal "engulfed in flames."

"I heard a dog screaming," said Arthur Greer. "It sounded like someone beating a dog."

Greer was in his backyard when he saw what looked like a ball of fire coming down the street.

"He had flames from head to toe and he was running so fast he was burning," Greer said. "He tried to lick himself when he was burning and his face caught on fire."

Someone lighted a dog on fire and five boys were accused of doing it.

"They used gasoline from a neighbor's lawn mower or something and poured it on him," said Billy Biggs, Metro Animal Control field operations Officer Billy Biggs. "They were holding him by the collar and somebody struck the lighter."

Biggs is investigating the case.

"We charged all of them with aggravated animal cruelty, which is, in the state of Tennessee, a felony," Biggs said.

Witnesses said when they saw the dog, they went after it, trying to help it, but they never found it.

"It broke my heart and scared me to death see something like that," Greer said.

Greer said he went after the boys and turned them in.

"I said, ‘Did you set the dog on fire?' and they said, ‘no,'" Greer said. "So, I took them to the other kid's house and we got all the children from there."

One of the boys' mothers said that her son admitted to the crime.

"My son had the gas," she said. "He said he poured the gas on side of the dog and the other boy lit the match."

She said the boys are very sorry.

"They are kids that normally don't set anything or anybody on fire," she said.

The Most Painful Laboratory in the United States:

The Air Force Research Laboratory at Brooks AFB

Brooks AFB use of animals in experimentation has long been a cause for concern due to the types of experiments performed within the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) as well as the extremely long term nature of the projects involved....
For the 2004 reporting year experiments at Brooks AFB utilized 2091 animals including dogs, rabbits, primates (rhesus monkeys and other species), pigs, rats, mice, frogs, and snakes. 907 (43.4%) of these animals were used in painful experiments without benefit of anesthesia.

This may be the highest level of experiments with unrelieved pain of any laboratory in the United States. Fifteen of the animals experiencing unrelieved pain were dogs, five were primates, 685 were mice, and 202 were rats.

The type of experimentation conducted at Brooks AFB clearly reveals the reason for the highly invasive nature of these protocols. Information obtained from the DOD database (http://www.scitechweb.com/acau/brd/) discusses the use of primates in projects involving laser injuries, microwaves and radiation.

Pigs are used in munitions research and wound research. Rabbits and guinea pigs are used in radiation research. Rabbits are also used in microwave experiments. When the nature of this research is examined it is not surprising that the laboratory at Brooks is among the nation’s worst labs for performing painful experiments. In fact, a skeptical mind would wonder if the laboratory is actually under-reporting the number of animals used in painful experiments.

What Is A "Buncher?"

A buncher either steals or "adopts" companion animals for the purpose of selling the animal. Bunchers can sell animals for one or more of the following reasons:

To be used in research labs (people also make money by selling these "free" animals to these labs.)
To be used as bait, for example, to train dogs in fighting rings (people will also make money by selling "free dogs" to these people.)
To be used as breeding stock in puppy mills or catteries (Again, making money off of these "free" animals.)

"Bunchers" can be very deceptive and they prey on people who place "free to good home" ads. They will sometimes use children as part of the ploy and present themselves as a "perfect" family. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

People value what they pay for. Pets obtained for free are are less likely to be spayed or neutered by their new owners, not properly vetted and kept up on their vaccinations, will most likely get heartworm, and more likely to be abused and/or discarded, because "there are plenty more where that came from!"

Experimenters in an American university cause convulsions in dogs and cats, to study their brain waves during the seizures, which gradually become more frequent and severe until the animals are in a state of continual seizure that leads to their death in 3 to 5 hours; the experimenters then supply several charts of the brain waves in question, but no idea how they could be put to any practical use......

Beagles, well known for their mild and affectionate natures, are tortured until they start attacking each other. The ‘scientists’ responsible for this announce that they were ‘conducting a study on juvenile delinquency.’

These experiments have nothing to do with progress, but rather the furthering of careers, and the huge amounts of money to be made by the countless companies involved in the carnage, which of course includes the biggest money-spinner of all, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
